EASY responds – Oracle is changing its license terms for Oracle Java

Oracle has changed its license terms for all Oracle Java versions later than version 8, as well as for all version 8 pathces and releases from January 2019 onwards. In the future, the use of software on this basis will only be possible using a commercial license for Java. This therefore also applies to the use of products from EASY.

As of January 1, 2019, our customers will have to assume any costs resulting from maintenance and support for the use of software based on the commercial Java version if Oracle Java version 8 or higher should still be used in EASY environments. An alternative to the commercial Java version that is still free of charge is OpenJDK, also provided by Oracle. Software developed for Java can also be used with OpenJDK.

EASY SOFTWARE AG responded swiftly and will provide the current versions of its products using Java from the end of the first quarter 2019 based on OpenJDK version 11. So, customers can choose between both versions, depending on whether Oracle Java would be licensed.

In doing so, the Java version provided together with the products will be replaced with OpenJDK. You can therefore quickly switch, without great expense, from Java to OpenJDK through a simple update of the EASY products used.
