Hybrid Cloud

The hybrid cloud combines the advantages of the public cloud and the private cloud. This cloud model allows companies to classify and separate their business processes and data. Data, processes and services that require protection stay in the company; non-critical services, processes and data can be made available to a definable user group via the internet. A precise and consistent classification of both types of process, including the associated services and data, is the prerequisite for a hybrid cloud which works effectively from the perspective of data protection. At this point, however, a completely different challenge emerges due to the separation of the data referred to above: The public part of the cloud should ultimately interact with the on-premises part of the hybrid cloud.

Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid cloud

The hybrid cloud model combines the benefits of the public cloud – in this case: scalability and location-independent access – with the need of many businesses to store sensitive data on-premises in their own company cloud.

  • Added security for data worth protecting and critical applications
  • Internal company guidelines (compliance) can be better complied with and implemented
  • Flexibly scalable: If required, and during peak times, on-premises processes and data can be outsourced to the public cloud
  • Resource-saving: The public part, in particular, benefits from the advantages of the public cloud. Storage space and computing power which is no longer required can be removed – and vice-versa.

The hybrid cloud naturally has disadvantages, though. From the conceptual and organizational perspectives, a hybrid cloud model requires meticulous planning. Once the concept is in place, it also has to be followed in the day-to-day running of the company. Other disadvantages of the hybrid approach:

  • Increased costs: In this cloud model, both in-house servers and external servers are used. The external resources are comparatively cheap to rent from external service providers – but the on-premises servers that remain are not.
  • The combination of external and internal resources increases the complexity of the hybrid cloud and increases the managerial workload for the data and processes of the administration team.
  • The public cloud is usually managed by a service provider. As data accidents can happen all the time, it is very important to avoid data from the on-premises part of the cloud finding its way into the public cloud.
