There are some things you just have to talk over in person. It’s always been that way – and it always will be. Of course, video conferences do have their place. They can help us to bridge huge distances and speak across time zones. But now and then, you just have to go and shake somebody’s hand. That’s why the number of business trips taken in Germany has barely budged over time, despite the advancement of digitization. It’s also why mobile ECM is becoming more and more important for companies.

Business travel? The numbers are staying constant

Four and a half million people in Germany took business trips frequently last year. 10.28 million more took occasional business trips. These numbers add up to a group of almost 14.78 million professionals domestically who travel for business – sales representatives, who are always on the go by definition, weren’t even included. If we compare this total with 2013 and 2014, the differences are minimal: the number three years ago was 14.86, and 15.27 two years ago.

The consistency is remarkable. Remarkable, because it proves one thing: mobility is and remains a core competence for companies. The number of business trips hasn’t dropped significantly, even though more and more companies are using collaboration platforms. Both of these trends – mobility and collaboration – go hand in hand, even as they cannibalize one another.

Mobile ECM: A helpful tool for decision-makers and administrators

What does all this mean for companies? Let’s look at decision-makers first. Certainly, we can assume that they make up a significant portion of business travellers. And since companies are working with limited resources anyway, the most effective thing to do is to include them in decision-making and coordination processes everywhere and at all times. Company management has been aware of this for ages.

But we can’t just focus on managers. Administrators also need to have access to their current projects while they’re on the go too – they’re just as important as parts of the process chain as the managers who have the “last word” on a project. Setting business trips aside for a moment, just think of the potential hiding in an administrator’s daily commute to work on the train. Why not use this time productively – if the company shows proper appreciation for your work?

Quick management and decision-making processes

One way or another – a mobile ECM that allows tasks in a workflow to be edited on the go creates added value for companies and speeds up management and decision-making processes. We don’t think the country is likely to see a major reduction in business trips in the future either – in fact, we’re willing to bet on it.
