An archive is generally considered to be a place for the storage of information for the future. This may be documentation which is significant for historical, legal or business reasons, for instance, but is not required on a daily basis. As a rule, archiving is carried out without any time limit.
In the objective – i.e. physical – world, an archive also refers to a building in which documents are stored. A digital archive, in contrast, refers to an electronic storage location where digital data is stored.
